MEDIA ADVISORY - JUDICIAL WATCH TO CHALLENGE RIADY/LIPPO PLEA AGREEMENT IN FEDERAL COURT TODAY

Riady to Appear and Attempt to Plead Guilty

Judicial Watch To File Pleadings Showing Punishment Does Not Meet the Crimes

(Washington, DC) Judicial Watch, the public interest law firm that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, has challenged the “sweetheart” plea agreement of the Clinton-Gore Justice Department with James Riady and the Lippo Group. (See Judicial Watch press release of January 12, 2001 entitled “Judicial Watch to Attempt to Block Riady/Lippo Plea Agreement with Clinton-Gore Justice Department at www.JudicialWatch.org.) Yesterday, the renowned columnist William Safire and the Wall Street Journal both published articles about why this plea agreement must not be accepted in the interests of justice. The Safire article is entitled “Riady Cops a Plea,” and the Wall Street Journal’s is “Damaged Justice.” Both articles are linked to our website at www.judicialwatch.org.

Judicial Watch will appear today in Los Angeles Federal Court to present its pleadings.

Date: Tuesday, January 16, 2001

Time: 9:30 am

Place: Federal Courthouse
255 East Temple Street
Los Angeles, California

Courtroom: 1439, 14th Floor

A press conference will follow on the courthouse steps.
