Corruption Chronicles

Veteran Georgia Prosecutor Charged With Felonies

The official who for decades was in charge of prosecuting felons in three Georgia counties has been indicted on multiple felony theft counts for stealing public money to take trips, pad his salary and that of his county employee wife.

Piedmont Judicial Circuit District Attorney Tim Madison, his wife and an assistant prosecutor were indicted by a county grand jury this week for theft, receiving stolen property, making false statements and writings, violation of oath of office and conspiracy to defraud the state. His office oversaw felony cases in three Georgia counties–Jackson, Banks and Barrow.

Madisonâ??s wife (Linn Jones Madison) worked in the District Attorneyâ??s office and is accused of forging timecards, with the help of her husband, to get paid for hours she never worked. The other prosecutor (Anthony Williams) is charged, among other things, with illegally double-dipping for taking a state and county salary and giving his boss (Madison) a kickback.

The ring was busted when a local newspaper published a series of investigative stories earlier this year that exposed questionable financial dealings in the prosecutorâ??s office. It inspired state officials to launch an investigation that led to this weekâ??s indictments.
